同志(dou-shi)

If you use translation tools to check the meaning of these Kanji, you’ll see words like ‘comrade’, ‘fellow’ and ‘companion’.‘Companion’ has many connotations in Japan. One of which has a negative and sexual connotation, it means ‘entertainer’ or ‘hostess’ at the bar in some occasions. But isn’t it great to find a trustworthy comrade whose goals are aligned with yours?

同 (dou)
It literally means ‘same’ or ‘equal’. It’s a neutral word which doesn’t have a positive or negative meaning when used alone. Therefore, it is mostly linked with other Kanji.

志(shi)
It has a lot of definitions, but in this context, it means ‘goal’, ‘target’ or ‘dream’. (other options: motives, hopes, aspirations)

Therefore…
In a nutshell, it expresses persons who share the same goals or aspirations in life. This is, of course, stronger than a ‘friend’ or ‘acquittance’. Having a ‘comrade’ will surely make us motivated and happy.
